I am a trumpet player(of course.) who was and still is influenced by their smooth west coast melodic style. They are greatly appreciated.

I bought my first LP featuring Conte back in 1958, just after leaving college. Many albums later, my love of his masterly lyricism and interpretations remains undiminished. What a star!!

i did a radio show back in the early 80's in Atlantic City, I used as my opening theme the "Just Friends" cut from the "SuperSax does Bird" Album. I went to Philadelphia where SuperSax was playing and met Med Flory and Conte Candoli, I remember a warm & friendly man. We talked for about an hour, I taped it for my show, I will always remember him.

.real nice site, thanks......I first met Conte when he was playing at the "orig." Cellar jazz club in Vancouver abt /59-60 I think ...Conte played 3 nites in the club & also did a 1/2 hr.CBC tv show.... I had the pleasure of sharing that show with him as a member of the Ray Sikora big band that backed him up. I recall as we were rehearsing some charts in the studio, Conte coming thru the door with his horn & an armlod of charts that he had brought with him from LA for us to do..most of the charts were things that featured him & were mostly out of the Terry Gibbs big band library....one of the charts that Conte did was "Happiness is just a thing called Joe" , beautiful chart & Conte played gorgeously on it.... I don't know if the tapes of that show are still kicking around or not ... I would love to have a copy of it...always loved his playing & his great sense of humor... a story he told every nite at the Cellar was some cockamany thing about a guy named "CasaBooboo" haha.. had us all on the floor!! God bless him!!
Thanks Conte...John Dawe, Vancouver BC |

I just wanted to express my gratitude to two of my trumpet/music heros! As a young man, I always marveled at the level of virtuosity, great musicianship
and versatility that Pete and Conte dis-
played. I thank you for contributing to
some of the success I have experienced in the music field. God bless you both!

Pete, you were the "soul" of the Peter Gunn show, the leading voice on those recordings. You and Conte were among the first jazz musicians I learned about when I got interested in jazz in the late 1950s. Thanks to cats like you two, I've had a long and fulfulling love affair with jazz; and now my daughter is a very fine jazz musician (alto sax), composer, and recording artist. She got inspired by listening to my jazz records, yours among them. Thanks for the interview, and thanks to you Sheryl for your help. Love your site.

Many thanks for the memories of two insirational trumpet players--and especially for the wonderful pictures that remind us that all trumpet players, but especially the greatest ones, are also fun-loving clowns. Love the picture of Maynard and Conte!
